In January 2006, Bawny went to China with other students from Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA). Each January a group from SOTA travels to Beijing, China, where they volunteer for a nonprofit aid organization, New Day Creations. The organization provides economic aid to a needy community outside the city. New Day Creations houses a foster care facility, retreat center, language school, medical and dental clinic, and computer education program, as well as helping a local village school and assisting in an elder care program. Using the model of service learning, students learn firsthand about Chinese business, society and culture by working alongside graphic artists, factory workers, aid workers, teachers and caregivers. While volunteering at New Day Creations students attend evening lectures on topics such as language, calligraphy, art, economy and business. The retreat center comfortably provides a place for students and chaperones to stay while working at the aid organization. View category |
